It was admonished by the Department of Transportation (DOT) that airlines had to recompense passengers for lost and delayed bags. According to DOT rules, airlines should pay the amount of $3,300 so that passengers who had lost bags could cover their expenses.

This amount was for clothing, shoes and accessories and other staff that you need every day life. But there were cases when airline companies only compensated for living essentials bought after the expiry of 24 hours making allowance for finding and delivering bags to passengers during that time. Moreover such compensation was limited as it concerned only long trips.

It meant that a passenger that lost his bag would have to wait during one day after arrival despite of the fact that earlier he had bought a suit for a big occasion that would be next day.

But Ray LaHood, U.S. Transportation Secretary, said passengers were not obliged to disburse for various necessities when they had to wait for luggage misplaced by airlines.

Also it was added by Dot that some U.S. airlines compensated for necessities only in case the luggage was misplaced on long distance flights. That meant that passengers, having a short distance flight, would not get compensation as it was considered that they were apparently at home and would be able to get everything themselves.

Mosley, spokesman of DOT, said that they began to examine airline companies and a number of violations had already been found. It was noted that DOT books with regulations contained only one recent change – the compensation amount which was decreased because of cost-of-living adjustments. Earlier airline companies had to reimburse the amount of $1,250. Also it was added that the Aviation Enforcement Office would look after carriers and take actions in case of necessity.

If no other measure would be taken such as an Airlines Passengers’ Bill of Rights according to which carriers would be penalized in case of violations.
