The World’s Scariest Runways

Have you ever came across a small runway that made the landing almost impossible? For islands with airports, this happens pretty often. Few pilots are trained to land on small runways and even fewer are the ones that do it on a regular basis. Hong Kong’s Kai Tak was the world most harrowing airport until ’98, with nail-biting landings.

Matekane Air Strip, in the tiny African kingdom of Lesotho, stands on the edge of a clift; it’s often possible that airplanes don’t take off at the end of the strip and have to drop down the 2,000-foot cliff until becoming airborne. These and other scary runways can be seen in an article put together by TravelandLeisure.com. Click here for the entire list, complete with photos.
