WizzAir, Hungary-based no-frills airline, has announced yesterday that it will enter the Latvian market by opening three new routes from Riga, starting with 28 March 2010. Be on the look out for some cool discounts for flights from and to Riga.

From spring, WizzAir will fly from Riga to London Luton (thrice-weekly), Oslo Torp (thrice-weekly) and Turku (twice-weekly).

“Wizz Air’s opening of the Riga market is a natural next step in the airline’s expansion in Central and Eastern Europe,” commented József Váradi, the company’s CEO.

“Important preconditions to our cooperation were the advantageous geographical position of Riga and our new tariff policy, which is one of the friendliest among the airports of the European capitals,” said Krisjanis Peters, Chairman of the Board at RIGA International Airport.

So one wonders, what about the losses reported by WizzAir?

With its new weekly service, easyJet becomes to first budget airline to connect London to Israel, tickets for the flight starting at £71.99 one way. In addition, easyJet will also fly to Morocco twice a week, starting at £32.99.

“This is a major breakthrough. For the first time the traveling public in the London area has the choice between a high cost traditional airline and a low-cost alternative. We look forward to bringing our unique blend of low fares with friendly service to a whole new market,” said Andy Harrison, easyJet’s chief executive.
