The APD Needs Reformation

A survey was released according to which many people considered that it was time to make changes in travel tax. It is expected that the ticket prices for a family of four going to the Caribbean will increase from £160 to £200 from November 1 and from November 2010 the price will again increase and it will be £300.

Growth of taxes influenced negatively on short haul and long travelers

It was highlighted by the YouGov survey, commissioned by Easyjet that private jets, cargo planes and foreign passengers were free of charge and it was also added that empty planes in comparison with full ones raised less income, it meant that the tax did not influence on flights.

According to the survey four fifths of the population considered that one should tax all flights, 65% said that foreign transfer passengers should also pay the fee.beijing-airport

In 2007 the government decided to establish reform APD based on flight tax but later refused to do that.

This week Willie Walsh, BA chief executive, pounced on at the government concerning the APD issue. “The hike will traumatize the aviation industry at a time when it is suffering badly and calls on the government to think again about APD”, he said to journalists on BA’s inaugural daily non-stop service to Las Vegas this week.

Andy Harrison, Easyjet chief executive, also criticized actions made by government related to APD. He also said that the government was going to reform Air Passenger Duty but backtracked and moreover the tax burden on the average family was increased. He added that there was incomprehension of people why their tax was increasing when at the same time private jets, cargo planes and foreign transfer passengers were free of charge. “We need to make air tax greener and fairer now. It should be reformed from a poll tax into a flight tax that taxes emissions, not families,” he said.
