After years of traveling across the country and one summer traveling in Asia, it became crystal clear to me that Asia trumps American airline services like a professional football team over your local pee-wee club. Instead of hanging their heads, however, American airports are starting to learn from their Asian brethren.
Tiny airport sleeping rooms — similar to the cubicles that Asian travelers use to catch a snooze in between flights — have arrived in America.
Lord knows layovers are about as welcome Steeler fans in Cleveland (still can’t believe they won!), so this addition of a comfortable napping space in American airports comes as a welcome surprise. Everyone loves a good nap! In fact, I never understood why nap time stopped after kindergarten. It’s like Christmas morning, you’re never too old for it.
Unfortunately, we can’t get too excited, my napping friends. As is the nature of our capitalist system, someone is out to make a profit from your long awaited nap.
Atlanta, the world’s largest airport, opened five Minute Suites this month where tired passengers can doze for $30 an hour.
$30 bucks an hour!? Something must be in the peaches down in George, because that’s just ridiculous. Granted the rooms are top-notch, but the idea of charging someone to take a nap sounds insane. Are the rich the only ones who get tired during layovers? NO! There should be a more recent college graduate with loans out the wazoo friendly napping space, and this certainly isn’t it.
It looks like we Americans still have some work to do!
